Battery Care

Battery Care

Rechargeable batteries can provide reliable service for many years when they are charged, used and stored appropriately.

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in everyday products and are generally safe when used with appropriate equipment and reasonable care.

The information below provides general battery-care guidance. Always follow the charging, operating and storage instructions supplied with your particular device or battery where these differ.

Replacement Battery Care

Charging

  • Use the charger and charging system intended for your device and battery.

  • Ensure the battery is installed with the correct polarity and orientation where applicable.

  • Do not use chargers, cables or equipment that are damaged or incompatible with the battery.

  • Follow the charging instructions provided with your device.

  • Disconnect chargers from the power supply when they are not being used.

  • Avoid modifying the battery, charger or charging system.

Many modern devices incorporate battery-management and charging controls. These systems should be allowed to operate as designed rather than bypassed or modified.

Storage

If a battery or device will not be used for an extended period:

  • Store it in a cool, dry location away from excessive heat and direct sunlight.

  • Avoid storing batteries in vehicles or other locations that can become extremely hot.

  • Protect removable batteries from moisture, impact and physical damage.

  • Keep loose batteries away from metal objects that could contact the terminals.

  • Follow any storage or maintenance-charging instructions supplied with the battery or device.

Looking After Your Battery

Battery capacity naturally changes with age and use.

Battery life can be affected by factors including:

  • Frequency of use

  • Charge cycles

  • Operating temperature

  • Storage conditions

  • Charging practices

  • The power requirements and condition of the device

A gradual reduction in runtime as a rechargeable battery ages can be normal and does not necessarily mean that the battery is faulty.

KEILO Battery Care

KEILO electric bikes use substantially larger lithium battery packs than most household replacement batteries and should be treated accordingly.

Charging Your KEILO Battery

  • Use the charger supplied or approved for the KEILO product.

  • Charge in a dry, well-ventilated location.

  • Place the charger and battery on a stable surface suitable for charging.

  • Keep the charging area away from excessive heat and direct sunlight.

  • Do not cover the charger or battery while charging.

  • Do not modify the charger, battery, connectors or charging system.

  • Disconnect the charger when charging is complete.

  • Avoid charging when nobody is present for an extended period or while everyone in the household is asleep.

  • Do not charge where the bike or battery could obstruct an exit.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand recommends using compatible, undamaged charging equipment and charging lithium-battery products on a hard, flat surface. Australian e-bike guidance similarly recommends avoiding unattended or overnight charging and keeping large battery charging away from exits and living areas where practical.

KEILO Storage

When a KEILO bike will not be used for an extended period:

  • Store the bike and battery in a cool, dry location.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or excessive heat.

  • Keep the battery protected from water and physical damage.

  • Follow the KEILO storage and maintenance-charging instructions supplied with the product.

  • Periodically check the battery when the vehicle is stored for an extended period.

Do not deliberately bypass or modify the battery-management system, controller, charger or other factory electrical systems.

Damaged or Abnormal Batteries

If an existing battery has been dropped, physically damaged or begins behaving unusually, stop using or charging it until its condition has been assessed.

For information about disposing of the old battery you are replacing, please see our Battery Disposal page.

Battery Warranty

Battery performance is affected by age, use, charging and storage.

Improper charging, unsuitable equipment, modification, physical damage or inappropriate storage may affect warranty coverage where those circumstances cause or contribute to the problem.

For complete warranty conditions and the warranty assessment process, please refer to our Warranty & Returns page.
